I have to say as a new HR professional it’s exciting to read this kind of in-depth analysis of competence in relation to our field. So often it seems that the credentials, be they a certificate, license, etc., that denote competence tend to have no real value as a determination of competence due to their lack of specificity of skill or experience. I feel that to a large extent these kind of “domain ontologies” for various industries as you describe them would be invaluable in assessing candidates competencies within a given field.

That said, I also feel as though the hiring process and candidate assessment have long been more art than science and I think this purely logical approach to determining actual competence is very much at odds with how candidates are currently assessed in the real world. Though interesting to think about I think those looking for a truly scientific way to assess competence are, unfortunately, in the minority.

Regardless of that fact, I am very much looking forward to the next installment in this series. Keep ‘em coming!
