Could Laity have been mistaken for Lacy.

I could not have detailed this better. I don’t know if every person will go along with you, however it probably does not matter. Keep up the excellent work.

This is fascinating. I have heard of Sir Thomas Slade of course but I had made no connection between his name and that name Mary Lacy adopted. I would love to know if he had a daughter or any near relatives named Elizabeth who also loved at Deptford. Please do let me know if you find out anything further and I shall also do a little digging myself. Thanks again!

As well as it being Elizabeth’s name, she might have taken the name Slade on the basis that being a Slade never did anyone any harm in the Navy’s shipyards (his uncle had been Master Shipwright at Plymouth and his son Thomas Moore Slade was victualler at Chatham, and used navy ships to smuggle art from revolutionary France).

However, as Sir Thomas had lived at Deptford himself…I need to find out if he had a daughter Elizabeth – he definitely had a son Thomas & daughter Frances.
